The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters is widely regarded by players and fans as having the most picturesque backdrop to a centre court anywhere in the world – the stadium court at the Monte-Carlo Country Club overlooks the azure waters of the Mediterranean. The event is the first of three ATP World Tour Masters 1000s played on clay and is one of the longest-running tournaments in the world, dating back to 1897.
Over the years some of the game’s great clay court masters have ruled in the principality, with Bjorn Borg, Thomas Muster, Gustavo Kuerten, Juan Carlos Ferrero and, of course, Rafael Nadal lifting the trophy since the early 1980s. No man has reigned supreme quite like Nadal, however, who has made the trophy his own in recent years, lifting the famous cup eight times in succession between 2005 and 2012.
In 2015 Novak Djokovic beat Tomas Berdych 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the final and his 23rd Masters 1000 title, drawing level with Roger Federer for second on the titles list.
